Mission: Justice
Location: USS Valiant, LT Kowal's Quarters
Timeline: 1 MAY 2389, 13:01

The conversation that was had with LCDR Thomas, the CO of the USS Valiant was not at all what Heather had planned. She had been hoping to be promoted to the Executive Officer position when the current XO departed the ship at Starbase 310 upon their arrival. As it turned out there was a completely different plan and both she and the XO would be departing Valiant when they arrived at Starbase 310.

“Lieutenant Kowal to Lieutenant Holleboom, your location?” she asked, via commbadge after getting into the turbolift and safe from the ears on the bridge.

“Holleboom here.” Jethro replied after stripping off his medical gloves. “Hang on one moment.” He turned to his patient and give the young petty officer a smile, “You’ll feel some slight discomfort, but it should be over in a day or two.” The woman smiled and thanked him before walking out. “Go ahead, Heather.”

“Can you meet me in my quarters or should I come to Sickbay?” she asked him.

“I have a thirty-minute break in a bit. If I can replicate some food at yours,I can head on over.” He replied.

“Alright,” she responded, sounding frustrated. Heather tapped her badge and went to her computer to at least give her best friend the news via text message.

Heather had gotten back to her quarters with about ten minutes to spare. Her uniform jacket was removed and tossed on the chair nearest the door, as usual, and she went to the replicator and got them a quick lunch and placed it on the table. She began looking around at everything she’d need to collect and pack over the next couple of days during transit.

The access key he held slid the door open for him. “Heather?” he asked as he spotted the little lounge empty, as was her small dinner table. A soft rummaging sound drew him to her bedroom. He joined her and leaned against the door frame. “Looking for something skimpy to wear for me?” he chuckled.

“Not exactly,” she said, turning to him. He’d know the expression on her face, it wasn’t good news.

With arms extended he walked towards her, enveloping her into his warmth.

She wrapped her arms around him and held onto him tightly, “I didn’t get the XO job,” she said, sounding disappointed.

His head nuzzled into her hair, while giving her chest a soft squeeze. “I’m sorry to hear that. But there’s always the next time,” he said softly.

“Well, actually… I got my own command,” she said, sounding a lot more somber who just got their first command should.

“You got your own?” Jethro asked, freezing in his affectionate rubbing of her back and nuzzling of hair.

“Yeah,” she said, trying to escape his grip a little. “I’m getting off the Valiant at Starbase three-ten,” she told him, she looked down and back at him, obviously sad. “I mean it’s cool I get my own unit and stuff but I don’t want to be away from you,” she said, swallowing.

A soft smile formed on Jethro’s lips, “Would you put your career on hold for me if I’d ask?”

“No, but I’d invite you to request a transfer to Starbase three-ten,” she said, frowning.

“Well, yes.” Jethro laughed, “I tried to make the point that we knew this could happen, but that we can find ways to be together. You beat me to it.”

“Well what if I’m okay with you asking for a transfer?” she asked.

“Then I’ll start filing paperwork after my shift.” he answered.

“Really?” she asked, looking surprised.

“I don’t have any commitment keeping me here except you. If you’re leaving I’d be happy to join you.”

“I’m not leaving on purpose,” she said, feeling like he was accusing her. It was clear that he wasn’t but she was upset and confused.

“Do you want me to come with you to three-ten?” he asked, a little hint of annoyance at her tone.

“Of course I do,” she said, nodding and stepping toward him. She put her arms around his waist, “I would like it a lot. But I also don’t want you to hurt your career to follow mine around.”

“I’m a doctor, probably the most secure career path within Starfleet.” Jethro assured her as his arms found her body again. “I can cure people wherever I am.”

“I guess, but my career doesn’t do well if I stay in the same spot. It makes sense, right?” she asked, she didn’t want to drag him down.

“You’re heading into command. That means moving about. So I’ll follow if I can, and otherwise catch up.” He bent down and kissed her softly on the lips, stifling any further discussion.”Now come on, let’s eat lunch before I have to get back on shift.”

“Okay,” she nodded. “I love you, Jay.”
